Shanell R. Oliver on Instagram: "A video went viral this week out of South Africa. A woman looked a Ghanaian man in his face and said “We don’t want Africans here.” On African soil. To an African man. But before we point fingers at South Africa, we need to look in the mirror. This is not a South African problem. This is an us problem. Nigerians and Ghanaians beefing for decades. Haitians and African Americans at odds in the same cities. West Indians and continental Africans talking down on each other at the same table. We colorism each other. We tribal each other. We use slurs that came straight from the same colonial playbook used against all of us. That is not culture. That is colonialism that never left. They drew lines through our families, separated us by tribe, by language, by manufactured nationality. They taught us the African on the other side of that border was a stranger. A threat. And we have been running that program ever since. The Ghanaian in Johannesburg, the Haitian in Brooklyn, the Nigerian in London. We are not each other’s enemies. We are the same story told in different languages. A house divided cannot stand. That has always been the strategy. We have to stop being the ones who carry it out.   A divided house will never stand, its so painful that we have resort in fighting ourselves and ignoring the main cause of the issues like the lady said, Africans have to stand together.
